FUNDING BODIES

European Union, General Directorate for Environment, LIFE+ Information & Communication financial instrument
The General Directorate for Environment is one of the 36 General Directorates (DGs) and special agencies constituting the European Union. The main role of DG Environment is to initiate and define new environmental legislation and to ensure that agreed measures are put into practice in the EU Member States.


The LIFE program is the EU’s funding instrument for the environment. The “Thalassa” project is implemented during the current phase of the LIFE program that runs from 2007-2013. The project is included in the framework of the third LIFE component that co-finances projects related to communication and awareness raising campaigns on environmental, nature protection or biodiversity conservation issues.

Stavros Niarchos Foundation
The Stavros Niarchos Foundation (www.SNF.org) was founded by Stavros S. Niarchos to support and promote his vision and interests in education, social welfare, health and medicine, and arts and culture. The Foundation is an international philanthropic organization, making grants in the areas of arts and culture, education, health and medicine, and social welfare. While prominent in its support of Greek-related initiatives, the Foundation’s activities are worldwide in scope.


In this context, the Stavros Niarchos Foundation supports financially the implementation of the European program “Thalassa: Learn, Act, Protect”, which aims to underline the imminent danger of the existence of the marine mammals living in the Greek Seas and to address the anthropogenic causes that threaten their viability, in order to protect the marine environment as a whole, for the benefit of the society at large.

Blue Planet Shipping SA
Blue Planet Shipping SA is a shipping management company based in Piraeus Greece. The company manages a fleet of modern dry bulk carriers at highly operational standards. Blue Planet Shipping has always prided itself on the quality and determination of its dedicated team for the protection of the marine environment as well as the conservation of the marine biodiversity, through participation in several projects one of which is the European project LIFE Thalassa for the preservation of the marine mammal species in Greece.

Green Fund
The Green Fund is a Public Entity, established by the Law 3889/2010 and is supervised by the Ministry of Environment, Energy and Climate Change. The objectives of the Green Fund are the administrative, financial and technical support of programs, measures, interventions and actions designed to enhance and restore the environment, the support of the national environmental policy as well as serving the public and social interest through the administration, management and utilization of the “green” funds, referred to in the Articles 3 and 7 of Law 3889/2010.

 

In this context, the Green Fund contributes financially to the European Program LIFE+ “Thalassa Campaign: Learn, Act, Protect”, that aims to inform and sensitize the public for the need to protect the endangered marine mammal species living in the Greek Seas.

The Thalassapedia site was designed by the environmental organizations, MOm/Hellenic Society for the Study and Protection of the Monk Seal and WWF Greece, in cooperation with the cetacean research institutes, Pelagos and Tethys.
